- All mediums are accepted.
- Please include an Artist Statement. The statement can be about one piece or a series of art pieces. Also describe/include medium of each art piece.
- Digital images must be:
* Scanned or digitally photographed.
* Between 600-1200 dpi.
* TIFFs, PDFs and print quality JPEGs - We prefer pieces to be no more than 70 MB.
If your piece is larger, please email the Art Editor or
illumination @ library.wisc.edu to request a CD drop off. - If your submission is accepted, expect one of our staff members to contact you about displaying your work in the Open Book Cafe in College Library.
Literature Guidelines
- Submissions must be under 5000 words.
- All forms are accepted, but please specify whether a piece is poetry or prose.
(We don’t label pieces as poetry or prose in the printed journal, but this helps our selection process.)
Essays Guidelines
- We welcome essays from all branches of the humanities, as well as memoirs, cultural critcism and observation pieces.
- Submissions must be between 500 and 12,000 words in length.
- Pieces longer than 6,000 words will be published in an abridged form.
- Please use Chicago style for citations.
Wisconsin Idea Guidelines
- We are looking for projects that uphold the Wisconsin Idea. For more information, please visit here.
- Please submit a 2-3 page write-up about your project. Best submissions will articulate the mission, logistics and significance of the project.
- Our editors will work with you to edit your submission and create a written piece that showcases your project. We are selecting for the quality of the project, not necessarily the strength of the write-up, though better write-ups help!
Again, thank you for submitting to Illumination: the Undergraduate Journal of Humanities.
