In the throes of reviewing . . .

The Illumination staff is currently reviewing and selecting the pieces for this semester’s issue. It’s a big job to do in a very short amount of time, but caffeine, frozen meals and persistence will get us through!

Thanks to everyone who submitted, and look for contact from us in the next couple of weeks.

Come to Illumination’s Open Mic next Tuesday (October 14) at 6:00 p.m. in the Open Book Cafe. Read poetry or prose selections by your favorite author, or bring your original work. Feeling seasonal? Bring creepy poetry.

We’ll have coffee and tea available, and we’ll be in OBC until 8:00 p.m. OBC is located on the first floor of College Library.

Come by for the whole event or just a little while. This is also a chance to have your questions answered about submitting to Illumination. The fall deadline is October 17.

**UPDATE: Staff selections for the Fall 2008 semeseter are complete. Staff bios will be posted soon. Thanks to all who applied, and please keep in touch with us. We may have openings this spring and will definitely have openeings next year.

Sustainable funding

A dream of many previous Illumination editors has finally become reality: Illumination now has a source of sustainable funding that will ensure we continue to print thousands of high-quality journals each semester.

UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley has established an endowment for the journal through the estate of Lemuel and Norma Boulware. For more information about Lemuel Boulware, please read his obituary in the New York Times.

This endowment is a result of the hard work of last year’s editor, Stephanie Krubsack, and others at the Wisconsin Union. Thank you to all of the alumni who directly or indirectly led to the connections that brought about this gift.

Fall Kick-off

Yes, it’s obnoxiously early for such things, but the Illumination fall kick-off is slated for Tuesday, September 16. It’ll be held in the Memorial Union (TITU) and there will be snacks, copies of the journal and lots of illuminating info.

Why the early post? If you’ve got ideas or requests for kick-off activities and must-haves, comment here.

Also note that the fall kick-off for the WUD Publications Committee is happening Thursday, September 11. For full details, check their website. We’re hoping Illumination can make a strong showing at “PubCom” events this year.
