SOCIETY FOR HUMANISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY
ANNUAL STUDENT PAPER PRIZE 2008
DEADLINE OCTOBER 17, 2008
The Society for Humanistic Anthropology (SHA) invites submissions for its annual Student Paper Prize, with two categories: undergraduate and graduate. The graduate prize will be awarded to the best paper delivered at any conference sponsored by the American Anthropological Association in 2007-2008. Undergraduate submissions need not be conference papers and can be course papers written during 2007-08 (those who graduated in ‘08 are eligible to submit in the undergraduate competition). An SHA committee will judge the papers on originality, creativity, clarity of writing, and most importantly, contribution to humanistic anthropology-the extent to which they:
* Explore what anthropology reveals about being human
* Capture the ways in which people create and/or transform meaning in various contexts
* Address the relationship between researcher and subjects
* Challenge conventional academic writing through alternative literary genres
* Make anthropology accessible to the general public.
Papers should be 7-10 pages in length (double-spaced and in 12-pt font, excluding references), and should be submitted in hard copy and electronic version. Papers should be accompanied by a brief cover letter, including academic affiliation, year in program of study, contact information, the relevant category of submission (undergraduate or graduate), and relevant details about the paper (at which conference was it presented, or for what course was it written?). Please include your name, academic affiliation, and contact information on the title page, but do not include any identifying information on the actual paper. Papers already published or accepted for publication at the time of submission are not eligible, but papers currently under consideration may be submitted. You need not be a member of the Society for Humanistic Anthropology to submit a paper. Any student currently enrolled in any accredited college or university in any nation is eligible for these prizes. Limit one submission per student. Submissions must be received no later than October 17, 2008.
The author of the winning paper in each category will receive $100 and a one-year subscription to the SHA’s journal, Anthropology and Humanism. An abstract of each winning paper will also be published in the SHA column of the Anthropology Newsletter of the AAA. Prizes will be awarded during the prize readings session sponsored by the SHA at the upcoming annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in San Francisco, CA (Nov 19-23, 2008).
Please send submissions (hard copy and electronic) and questions to:

For those of you who are in Madison and are still involved with Global Connections/Publications/Souvenirs, I have a huge favor to ask: Memorial Union Bash is this Sunday night (August 31). The Publications Committee is hosting Bingo and we still need a few volunteers to ensure that our event will go off without a hitch. We need 7 people willing to be bingo callers or facilitators for at least an hour on Sunday night (if you want to stay the whole time from 8 pm to 11 that would be really wonderful!) All volunteers will receive a FREE Union t-shirt for their efforts! Please let me know as soon as possible (like…Tuesday) if you are available and willing to help out!
