So who are we, exactly?
Kate Campbell: An art history and French major who will graduate next spring, Kate has been the art editor with Illumination. She also works in Special Collections at Memorial Library. She’d like to see the centerfold piece become a fold-out and have a gallery night event at the Open Book Cafe that could include music majors.
Emily: An English and journalism major with a certificate in women’s and gender studies, Emily will be a junior. A hero to Illumination, Emily stepped in to become the head copy editor last semester after an editor withdrew from the staff. The gold star trooper is also involved with WSUM, PRSSA and works in the Chancellor’s Office. She thinks we can do much more in promotions/marketing with some more media outreach.
Paulina: A comparative literature will-be sophomore, Paulina is active with WISPIRG and the Badger Herald and she hopes to be part of the Black Music Ensemble next year as well. She thinks we can beef up the essays section and get a wider variety of artwork–maybe comics or cartoons? She also thinks more tabling, connections with the advertising club and taking advantage of facebook can help.
Caitlin: A Spanish and journalism & mass comm major, she’ll be a junior next year. Caitlin has been with the journal as an essays editor, as well as a literacy tutor and volunteer with the South Madison Coalition of the Elderly. Some of her ideas to improve the journal are to look at running a multiple issue series piece and in-depth artist profiles.
Jack: An English and history major who will be a junior next year, Jack was an ace prose reviewer last year. He’s a bold columnist for the Badger Herald, as well as a host for WSUM. He thinks we could get music involved at some of our events and have a stronger presence with the music department in general.
Sarah Ackerman: A retail/interior design major who will be a junior next year, Sarah has been with the journal since forever as a publicity assistant, director and layout assistant. She will be working at the Design Gallery in the school of human ecology and hangs out at the Retail Club and American Society of Interior Designers.
Sarah Horvath: Sarah will be a junior next year with a certificate in women’s studies. She’s worked with Illumination as a prose reviewer and has been very active with the Publications Committee, heading up the ExploraStory series. She also works at UW Press. Sarah thinks we need to represent a more diverse audience and reach out to minority groups for submissions. She also would like to see a few more full page art spreads and larger photos.
Kate Neuens: An English major with a women’s studies certificate, Kate will be a sophomore. She was our submissions editor last year at the tender age of freshman, as well as a prose reviewer. She’s also a rugby player, so be nice to her. She’s going to be overseeing the expansion of the WI Idea section (which includes finding more pieces and helping maintain a higher writing quality). Know of cool on-campus projects or how to find them? Let her know!
Sandra Knisely is the incoming editor-in-chief for Illumination. She has been the prose editor, a prose/poetry reviewer and copy-editor. A journalism and anthropology major, she is entering her senior year. She believes Illumination needs to create a strong online presence and a sense of community on staff, with advisors, and with alumni.
